Media Evaluation

Evaluation

From my research I found out about the conventions of popular music magazines. I found out that Magazine conventionally have attractive house colours that appeal to the target audience. The covers usually have a main image of a popular music artist or group, surrounded by other articles that look interesting. Usually magazines stick to one type of music genre. Such as “Kerrang!” is mostly about indie music, with a group such as All Time Low on the cover. It sticks to red, black and white house colours. Most music magazines use quotes on the front cover or on the main pictures because readers will see them and want to read more about so they are much more likely to buy the magazine. I was able to use this information and put quotes on my magazine so that it will be more attractive and interesting to look at.

A publishing company that produces a similar magazine to mine is Bauer Media Groups Q magazine. The Bauer Media Group is a large German publishing company based in Hamburg, operating in 15 countries worldwide. The similarities between Q and my magazine are the house colours, including Black, White and Red. Also the genre of the music the magazine is indie and pop, which is the same as mine. Other similarities include a symmetrical cover layout, with the main image in the middle and text around it.

Target Audience:

My Target Audience is primarily teenagers and young adults, aged from 13 to 29. I found out this target audience by looking at other magazines target audiences, including NME and Q. I also used a survey, asking about what kind of people read these magazines and what ages.

Institutions:

The magazine that mine can most relate to is NME.

NME is published by IPC Media, which is probably the most well known publisher, as over 26 million people in the UK read magazines published by them. Over 85 media brands are published by them. Well known magazines include Nuts, Country Life and TV Times. IPC Media is owned by Time Inc. Which is one of the largest content companies in the world, the largest in America and a leading publisher in the U.K. Time Inc.'s franchises have expanded online, onto television, radio and onto mobile devices. Time Inc. is owned by Time Warner, a massive leader in media ad entertainment to do with publishing, films and television. It is a conglomerate company that also owns Warner Bros. which is well know for many films and games.

IPC Media would be an excellent choice to produce my magazine as they sell other magazines in the same area and genre as mine. They are experts in selling mass amounts of magazines (like NME) and they could help make my magazine successful.

My Magazine is similar to NME, in genre and style, however I have changed some of NME's main features and made them my own. For Example, I have used a similar content page design, but changed the layout and colours used for my own. NME is where I got many of my ideas so that I knew they would be appropriate for the target audience.

Representation:

The characters/music artists in my magazine are represented as young, cool indie stars in which the my target audience admire and aspire to. They are present as singers and band members who are really into their music.
Technologies:

Out of the different technologies that I used, the most important one was the computer. It enabled me to be able to access the internet, which was especially useful for my research and access to my blog. The computer was also useful for editing the photo's that I took on the Camera, the program I used for this was fireworks.

To compose my magazine together, I used Microsoft Publisher, it was simple to use, and gave e great templates to make a much more realistic magazine. Google, among other websites on the internet were very useful for my research into different magazines. I used Monkey Survey to create surveys to find out about target audiences.

The Blog was extremely vital to creating my magazine, mostly because it kept my work organised and up to date as i uploaded it. I could also use it to keep an eye on what needed to be done, by posting on targets and aims.
